The New York NewFilmMakers is an inventive screening program created by Barney Oldfield, GM of Angelika Entertainment Corp. This arrangement of films are gathered from the nations most promising filmmakers, and set on a weekly viewing schedule. Every Wednesday at 7 PM, independent filmmakers are given the chance to screen their works directly to the public. This is also a chance for New York audiences to gain the opportunity to see outstanding new films. The screenings have a West coast counterpart as well, allowing the same level of exposure to reach Los Angeles audiences.
RULES OF THE GAME, a short by internationally acclaimed writer and director Marton Varo Jr., will be featured during the Summer 2004 Screening schedule, on Wednesday August 18th, 2004. This event will highlight a selection of six short films, all running under 30 minutes each.
RULES OF THE GAME revolves around the final moments of a siege in a comic book shop. The clever and fast-paced storyline packs together great writing, gifted acting, and some surprising twists into its eleven-minute "real-time" running time. Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Leonard Schrader (KISS OF THE SPIDERWOMAN) served as script consultant for the film. The film also boasts a phenomenally talented cast led by the prolific and charismatic Bruce Davison, an acclaimed performer, having appeared in a number of memorable roles throughout his impressive and established career in both, film and television.
RULES celebrated its World Premiere at the WT Film Festival in Os, Norway in November 2003, and its US Premiere at the Eclipse Film Festival in St. George, Utah also that month. Since then, it is continuing its run of the festival circuit, appearing in numerous festivals both nationally and worldwide. The film has most recently celebrated awards, recognitions and honors from the Chicago Really Short Film Festival and the George Lindsey Film Festival. The film is scheduled to screen this summer in various cities internationally, including London, New York and San Antonio.

The Real Shorty Award:
"Rules of the Game"
Okay, so truth be told, the best film of the fest had a budget that most probably exceeded all of the other films' combined. Marton Varo Jr.'s "Rules of the Game" brought star power in Bruce Davison and Evan Ellingson, production value from L.A. and a superior soundtrack to boot. Highly competent, highly entertaining stuff from an up and coming director with glaringly obvious talent, but not really in the spirit of the locally focused low/no budget festival. You probably got jipped Marton, but we're psyched to see your first feature "Confessions."

An original conception!
Dan O'Bannon (Acclaimed screenwriter of ALIEN, TOTAL RECALL)
